CIAO!

THIS IS IT!

CIAO! THE FINAL CLUB VELVET!

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO TASTE ANY OF KINI'S KOCKTAILS, and in honor of CLUB VELVET's beloved original bartender "Tweety," we will be featuring the popular and potent "WRATH OF TWEETY" at a discounted price all night long! Have one for a mere $5.25! Have a few!

I sincerely appreciate the loyal support over the last few months, not to mention the last five years (hard to believe i started CLUB VELVET in November 1995!). Perhaps CLUB VELVET will return occasionally in 'special event' form or i will make the sporadic dj "King Kini" appearance (which i will undoubtedly be more excited to do). If so, you will be the first to know.

...ALSO on this night (as if there isn't enough reason to show up)... we're hosting the INTERGALACTIC CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE's (formerly Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble) "I Dig" CD Release Party! The newly named "I.C.E." is releasing a live CD recorded during last April's amazing "Son of Voodoo" performance at the Fine Line Music Cafe (some of you were probably there - remember? King Kini was featured between sets!). Be sure to stop in December 13th, and pay respects to both the I.C.E. for their cool CD release and to KING KINI'S CLUB VELVET on this, its final farewell!

THE FINAL CLUB VELVET will be held Wednesday, December 13th (9pm-1am) at the new JITTERS, 205 Hennepin Ave E, Minneapolis (kitty-corner from Nye's Polonaise Room... in the downstairs of the Times Bar).

ATTENTION ALL SECRET AGENTS, BOSSA NOMADS, EXOTICATS AND SEX KITTENS:

After over a year on hiatus, King Kini's CLUB VELVET returns as a weekly event in Northeast Minneapolis.

Starting August 9th, CLUB VELVET will be held every Wednesday night at the new JITTERS, 205 Hennepin Ave E, Minneapolis, (612) 617-1111 (kitty-corner from Nye's Polonaise Room... in the downstairs of the Times Bar).

If you have yet to checkout JITTERS in it's new northeast digs, you will be pleasantly surprised by it's super space-age *Kini Approved* decor, a full liquor license (a CLUB VELVET must), and permanent sound system. This is the perfect atmosphere in which the VELVET vibe should reappear, and it's currently the ONLY venue in town King Kini would consider for CLUB VELVET's new home (...just a block from its former location!).

Have you have long been dreaming of CLUB VELVET music and drooling for a CLUB VELVET cocktail? Has the past year been dreary and drab without reason to wear a fez or smoke from a cigarette holder?

Show up for CLUB VELVET's Grand Re-Opening WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9th, 2000. Feel free to dress-up. Be swank. Bring your friends. Savor a VelvetiniTM. Mark it on your calendar. Bongo Bongo! Let's have a party!

With the success of last year's standing-room-only show at the Fine Line Cafe, Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble (MCE), will again present an eclectic evening of music including noire, lounge, contemporary, and experimental. We will perform works by L A bassist Joey Altruda, a leader in the "new cool school" movement in Los Angeles, who's music is featured in the movie "Swingers".

We will also give the world premiere of a new work by Robert Drasnin, the former head of CBS television's music division for 20 years and last year's featured artist by MCE. Other highlights of the evening include Leonard Bernstein's classic and rarely performed "Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs", The soundtrack to Orson Well's "Touch of Evil", XTC's "Man who Sailed Around His Soul" featuring Vic Volare, and two works by Yma Sumac with Janet Gottschall-Fried, performer with the Minnesota Opera and the Theatre de la Jeune Lune.

This year's show features an outstanding line-up of soloists including internationally regarded percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson, a frequent performer with Germany's "Ensemble Modern", giving the world premiere of Erik Griswold's Every Night the Same Dream. We will also have as guest artists the Vienna Sax Quartet performing their arrangement of Steve Reich's New York Counterpoint which was re-written in collaboration with the composer. The MCE band will also include Doug Little from the Motion Poets on solo tenor sax and flute.

In between sets, audience members will be treated to Minneapolis' own "lounge/exotica" expert, King Kini, spinning vinyl from his truly unique and unmatched collection of vintage recordings.

Please contact MCE for photos, interviews, or questions.

James C. (Hymie) Peterson died Wednesday, February 16th at Fairview-University Medical Center in Minneapolis after an extended illness. He was 56.

A walking encyclopedia of music, Hymie shared his passion for jazz, latin and other forms by opening Hymie's Vintage Records, a store where one always felt comfortable whether browsing the shelves or conversing over a cup of coffee. The store became well known in Minneapolis and elsewhere as a treasure trove for collectors.

Hymie was a regular at Club Velvet in its heyday (he once bought the house a round of drinks and smirked, "I always wanted to do that") and always made sure we had plenty of matchbooks - imprinted with his store's address - to give out. Hymie was a major supplier for my own vinyl habit and a good friend.

He will be missed.
